I don't want to a part of the diabetes epidemic. We've heard ad nausem that USA has too many obese Americans. Yes, we have an obesity problem and epidemic diabetes numbers, but we're far from alone. Even China is a diabetic catastrophe affecting 11.6 % of the population! In 1980 when the country had no fast food, only 1% had diabetes. Today even though most Chinese people we see in pictures don't appear obese- their diets are way too high in processed food resulting in this disease.
This very insightful book helped me to understand diabetes. Diabetes has overtaken the planet. Type 2 diabetes is thoroughly explained and understood to be essentially a dietary disease caused by too much insulin, which our bodies secrete when we eat too much sugar. Insulin helps move sugar into our cells to give us energy. If you don't burn off that sugar sufficiently, then over decades your cells become completely filled and can't handle any more. the next time you eat sugar, insulin cannot force anymore of it into your overflowing cells, so sugar (glucose) spills into the blood. This is the primary symptom of type 2 diabetes. We say the body is insulin resistant.
Medications such as metformin lowers blood glucose, but doesn't help rid the body of excess glucose. Glucose is shipped to other organs, kidneys, eyes, heart, nerves creating a plethora of problems. We've all seen people blinded or in wheelchairs with amputated toes, feet, and even legs due to this disease.
