He grew up on the Jersey shore, and besides loving all things that taste and smell of saltwater, he developed an early curiosity for life sciences. In fact, he was originally a pre-med major before his 60's - style search for meaning and my love of all things bookish drew me into more literary pursuits. He loved school so much that he kept going until he couldn't afford it anymore. Then, in the mid-70s, he moved to Washington, DC, to try his hand at journalism - which he has been doing ever since.
