Vasil Ivanov Kunchev, known as Vasil Levski, was a Bulgarian revolutionary and is a national hero of Bulgaria today. Dubbed the Apostle of Freedom, Levski ideologised and strategised a revolutionary movement to liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Levski founded the Internal Revolutionary Organisation, and sought to foment a nationwide uprising through a network of secret regional committees.
In 2014 Iztok-Zapad Publishing House offered to the contemporary reader the letters of Vasil Levski, his pocket diary and other documents, written personally by the Apostle of Freedom. All of them are gathered in one place thanks to the work of the great historian and publicist Dimitar Todorov Strashimirov (1868-1939).
