They call James G. Ballard (1930-2009) "a prophet of the present" and "the most original English writer of the 20th century". He represents postmodernism and the "new wave" of science fiction. His work is heavily influenced by the Surrealist artists and he is sometimes described as a Surrealist in literature. He is the author of numerous novels and short stories, some of which have been filmed by famous directors such as Steven Spielberg and David Cronenberg. Ballard has won a number of prestigious awards and nominations, including the Golden Pen, Booker, Nebula, and British Fantasy.
His stories in this collection are set in locations around the world: in England, America, Mexico, France and China. The selection has been made to present for the first time to Bulgarian readers different countries from his rich oeuvre. The plots - incredible stories that resemble dreams - are paradoxical and wide-ranging: philosophical problems and issues of the supernatural and the subconscious, criminal cases, time travel, the mixing of different dimensions, the disastrous consequences of the use of new technologies, the danger of unstoppable consumerism. The horror in some of his stories is comparable to what Hitchcock created, sounding like a sequel to Oscar Wilde's Portrait of Dorian Gray or reminiscent of Ray Bradbury.
