"Romeo and Juliet" is the sixth book in the bilingual library collection "English Poetic Classics" by Iztok-Zapad Publishing House. It continues the library’s Shakespeare Collection, which so far includes individual volumes of five tragedies by the English Renaissance poet—"Hamlet", "Othello", "King Lear", "Macbeth", and "Julius Caesar". All of them are presented in the newest translation by Alexander Shurbanov—a poet, literary scholar, and internationally renowned university professor, who has also translated Geoffrey Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" and John Milton's "Paradise Lost". Each of Shakespeare's dramas is introduced by an analytical preface and accompanied by explanatory commentary notes. The English text is based on the most authoritative contemporary academic editions. The bilingual format of this collection allows readers, by comparing the original and the translation, to gain a deeper insight into the subtleties of the text of some of the most valuable works in English literature, as well as to delve into the specific nature of poetic translation of classical masterpieces.
