The edition, prepared by the Archives State Agency and the East-West Publishing House, contains the journal and memories of the great Bulgarian politician and statesman Nikola Mushanov.
Mushanov began writing his diary on June 19, 1913, when he was 36 years old, and his last records were on July 9, 1950, when he was 78. Impressive are the sequence, tenacity and even the stoicism of the author who, though with lengthy interruptions (42 years), he has been able to record the most important and valuable thing about himself, to think soberly and rationally about historical events and facts. And most importantly, to have a remarkable sense of historicity, of value to everything written and preserved by him in view of tomorrow.
The different parts of the present edition, the journal and the memoirs of Nikola Mushanov, should be regarded as a general, multi-constituent document, which is above all the author's curriculum vitae, but also it gives a complete panorama of the Bulgarian social and political life from the time of the Liberation to mid-twentieth century. In fact, from our well-known diaries and memorable testimonies of the new Bulgarian history, there is no such long-lasting period as the age of observation study. Its uniqueness is also related to the depth of the observations and the multi-aspect of the analysis of the events in which participant is Nikola Mushanov. They started from his early childhood in Dryanovo (he was born on April 12, 1872), in the coincidence of circumstances at the epicenter of some of the bloodiest episodes of the April uprising and the defense of the Shipka position during the Russo-Turkish War. It is from that time that his first memories date, and his life story begins. With the extreme precision of the details, the description of the everyday life of his family differs. The food, the world of household goods, children's games, family relationships and the age hierarchy are described with the skill of a professional ethnographer. Undoubtedly, this is a colorful contribution to everything we know so far about the traditional culture of Bulgarians in the last quarter of the nineteenth century
- Prof. Mihail Gruev, Chairman of Central State Archives
