Born Nadine Lhopitalier, daughter of a policeman, she started working in a Renault factory at 14. Her Paris hotel particulier, built for Napoleon III, is furnished with a formidable art collection and overlooks the presidential palace.

Yet, despite such obstacles as her Catholicism (conforming to the Rothschild family tradition, she converted to Judaism) and simple background, she has endured, and her freckles and youthful cheeks belie her 55 years.
