William Benedict Hamilton-Dalrymple

William Dalrymple is one of Britain's most distinguished historians. He is the author of several bestsellers, including White Mughals and The Last Mughal, which won the Wolfson History Prize and the Duff Cooper Prize respectively, as well as Return of a King, winner of the Hemingway and Kapuściński prizes. His book The Anarchy was awarded the Arthur Ross Book Award by the Council on Foreign Relations. He is a frequent broadcaster and the writer and presenter of three television series, one of which won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Series at the BAFTAs. He is also the recipient of the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, The Sunday Times Young British Writer of the Year Award, the Foreign Correspondent of the Year at the FPA Media Awards, and holds five honorary doctorates. Dalrymple is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Asiatic Society, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and has held visiting fellowships at Princeton, Brown, and All Souls College, Oxford. He writes regularly for The New Yorker and The Guardian. In 2018, he received the prestigious President’s Medal of the British Academy for his outstanding literary achievements and for co-founding the Jaipur Literature Festival. He co-hosts the popular podcast Empire alongside Anita Anand. William lives with his wife and their three children on a farm outside Delhi.
