Varna and Preslav Metropolitan Simeon is Bulgarian metropolitan bishop (1840-1937). He is an active participant in the Bulgarian Revival and the Church National Struggle, the youngest Metropolitan of the Bulgarian Exarchate, who was only 32 years old and ruled his diocese for 65 years - an unprecedented case in the Orthodox world. After the Liberation, he was one of the "builders of modern Bulgaria", state and enlightener, chairman of the Third National Assembly (1882-1883); publicist, Scholar-Hellenist, translator, regular (1884) and honorary member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1923). Through his manifold gifts, merits and the magnitude of his personality, Metropolitan Simeon can be compared not so much to his contemporaries as to the great spiritual figures and bookwriters such as Patriarch Evtimii.
