Severina Balabanova was born in Stara Zagora, where she graduated the Romain Rolland Foreign Language High School. In 1994 she began to study Sinology at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". In 2005, she successfully defended a doctoral dissertation on "Dream and Reality in Taoist and the Buddhist Chinese Dream Narratives of the Six Dynasties and the Tang Dynasty (based on material from “Taiping Guandji“ ”The Extensive Gleanings of the Reign of Great Tranquility”). Specializes in Beijing Pedagogical University (1997-1998) and National Taiwan University (2003). Her academic activities in the field of Sinology continue with post-doctoral research at the University of Montreal (2007-2008), the Center for Chinese Studies in the National Library of Taiwan (2009), the National Taiwan University (2009-2010), the Academy of Singapore, Taiwan (2010-2012), Zhuhua National University, Taiwan (2012-2014). The field of her studies is the medieval story of the Six Dynasties (222-589) and the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the interaction between literature (mainly narrative prose) and religion (Taoism and Buddhism) from the Chinese Middle Ages, as well as narrative theory.
