Sergey Lukyanenko

Sergey Lukyanenko — Russia's foremost science fiction writer and one of the few Russian authors to achieve significant acclaim beyond his homeland. Born in Kazakhstan in 1968 to a family of physicians, Lukyanenko trained as a psychiatrist before realizing his true calling lay in storytelling. While studying medicine in Alma-Ata, he began writing science fiction out of sheer frustration with the scarcity of good genre literature available in the Soviet Union. His first short story was published in 1988, and by the mid-1990s he had become a full-time professional writer.

Lukyanenko is best known worldwide for his **Night Watch** series, an urban fantasy saga chronicling the supernatural conflict between the forces of Light and Darkness in contemporary Moscow. The series has sold millions of copies globally, been translated into more than 30 languages, and inspired two blockbuster films that became cultural phenomena in Russia and abroad. Beyond the Watch novels, his prolific bibliography includes over 25 books spanning space opera, cyberpunk, and philosophical science fiction, earning him more than 59 literary awards—including Russia's prestigious Aelita Prize.

An engaging and multifaceted personality, Lukyanenko maintains a lively online presence, engaging directly with readers through his blog and social media, and continues to be a tireless advocate for copyright protection in the digital age. A devoted family man and the proud father of three children, living in Moscow, Lukyanenko remains one of the most influential and beloved voices in contemporary speculative fiction.
