The book can be read as an unfolding of the meaning of the word contained in the title. "Outliving" is a polysemantic word, pointing to outliving someone and being outlived by another, outliving something in or of oneself. Living as outliving can be caring or pouring, accepting a gift or bearing a burden, overcoming or breaking, working on nostalgia or investing in the future, insisting on the presence of the absent or opening a cavity of the present. But it is also an ambivalent word, indicating the passage through birth and death.
