В настоящата книга втора от своите Опити (1580) Монтен продължава да търси себе си с помощта на древните автори и извън отъпканите пътища на тогавашните научни дисциплини. Самопознанието е дълъг и труден процес за мислител, който заявява открито: „Моят занаят и моето изкуство е да живея.“

Монтен насочва вглеждането в себе си към радикално нова цел – не за да вае своя статуя на велика личност, а за да се отърси от наслоените представи, утвърждавани с векове, за човека господар на природата и на животинския свят. В това по същество демистифициращо начинание важно място заемат Монтеновите идеи за вярата в Бог и за другите възможности на религиозното познание. Така в централния текст от книга втора на Опити – „Апология на Реймон Себонд“ – Монтен излага своите възгледи за човека. Традиционно критиката ги поставя под рубриката „Скептицизмът на Монтен“. По-вярно би било да виждаме в тях ярка полемика с Аристотеловия антропоцентризъм.
