Johannes Hartlieb

Johannes Hartlieb (c. 1410–1468) was among the most educated German scholars of his time. Born in Bavaria, he received his medical education in Italy—the center of European science and humanism at the time. Upon returning to his homeland, he served as a court physician to the Dukes of Bavaria in Munich, establishing himself not only as a doctor but also as a translator and author.

Hartlieb played a crucial role in disseminating scientific and literary knowledge in the German language, translating works from Latin to make them accessible to a broader audience. His interests spanned medicine, history, astrology, theology, and the natural sciences—a defining trait of Renaissance humanists.
