Christo Matanov

Professor Christo Lukov Matanov is a Bulgarian historian.

He was born on July 5, 1952, in Harmanli. He graduated from the 114th English Language Teaching School in Sofia (1971). In 1978 he graduated from the History Faculty of the Sofia University, profile "History of Byzantium and the Balkan Peoples". He specialized in Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, Greece (1981, 1984, 1987), Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies, Washington, USA (1987-1988) and Cologne University, Germany (1991-1992).

Regular aspirant at the Institute of Balkan Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1980-82). In 1983 he defended a dissertation on "Problems of the Political Development of the Southwestern Balkan Lands in the 14th Century". Research Associate at the Institute of Balkan Studies at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Associate Professor at the Faculty of History, Sofia University (1983-1987), Professor of Medieval History at the National School of Ancient Languages and Cultures (1985-1987).

Since 1993 he has been a regular associate professor, since 1999 - a regular professor, and since 2004 he has been Head of the Department of Byzantium and Balkan Peoples at the Faculty of History of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". He is the author of 14 books and over 80 textbooks, articles published in Bulgaria and abroad.
