Тhe extremely accurate studies by Bogdan Filov The Sofia Churches "St. Sofia" (1913) and "St. George" (1933) were the first and only complete historical, architectural and artistic descriptions and interpretations of the two temples. Both texts sum up the results of archaeological research led by the author himself. Here Filov formulates and proves his thesis about the specificity of ancient and medieval culture along the Bulgarian lands as a mediator between the East and the West. It fits into the wide circle of Byzantine culture, which Filov refuses to identify simply with Constantinople, and draws attention to the specifications introduced by the regional peculiarities.
