Atanas Petrov Shopov (1855–1922) is a prominent Bulgarian diplomat, scholar, publicist and translator.
He was born in Panagyurishte in 1855. He graduated from the local class school and studied at the Military Medical School in Constantinople. After the April Uprising in 1876, he interrupted his education. As a representative of the Bulgarian exarchy, he visited the affected rebel settlements in the 4th Revolutionary District and after that he published a detailed exhibition of Turkish atrocities in the Stara Planina newspaper. He then emigrated to Russia. Takes part in the Russo-Turkish Liberation War (1877-1878). He was awarded the Order of Honor of the Alexandrian Cross.
He is a member of the Bulgarian Literary Society since 1884. He studied at a Russian Medical School. He also studied law sciences in Paris and Petersburg. After the Liberation, he was a secretary and editor of the Bulgarian Exarchate in Constantinople, a consul in Thessaloniki. In 1887 and 1891 he made trips to Thrace and Macedonia, and afterwards he published his studies in the works: "The Nativity and the Language of the Macedonians" and "About the Life and Situation of the Bulgarians in the Ottoman Vilayets". He collaborates with the Chitalishte magazine, the newspapers Pravo, Den, Vek and other periodicals. He is author of articles on pedagogical issues and poems. He translates from Greek and French.
