In the 3rd millennium BC, on the island of Crete, and on some other Aegean islands, as well as in the Peloponnese, the oldest classical societies and state organizations in Greece arose. Archaeological excavations carried out in a number of places convincingly suggest that during this period the southern parts of the Balkan Peninsula and the nearby islands are on the same line of development as the ancient Eastern societies and are in constant interaction with them.
