Alexander Yanchulev is the son of Stefan Yanchulev. He was born in 1938, an engineer, for many years a professor of hydraulic engineering and land reclamation at the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy in Sofia. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the communist regime in Bulgaria, he was an active member of the Union of Democratic Forces, a member of the Seventh Grand National Assembly, and an adviser to the Council of Ministers. He was the first democratically elected mayor of Sofia (1991-1995) and regional governor of the capital. Prof. Alexander Yanchulev was the first chairman of the Union of Democratic Municipalities in Bulgaria and their representative in the European Union (1991-1992).
