Description

The book is the first of its kind, and it depicts the study of the hagiographic narratives (torture) of St. George the Victorious in the South Slavonic Literary and Cultural Tradition. The early torture (Passio prima), which preserved the most archaic, amazing wondrous texts, was analyzed in the context of its Byzantine, Latin and Oriental versions. Three more torture translations and two contingent editions of St. George's hagiographies have been explored, originating in Slavic environments. The hagiographic works are studied from a philological and cultural-historical point of view and their links with other cultural phenomena have been sought - the Bible, apocryphal works, testimonies of ancient and early Christian authors and others. Their texts are published in full, making them accessible to all those interested in Old Bulgarian literature and Balkan cultural history - researchers, students and amateurs.
