Robert Gerwarth

Robert Gerwarth (born 12 February 1976) is а Professor of Modern History at UCD and Director of the Centre for War Studies. Having served as the first VP for Global Engagement in the College of Arts and Humanities for three years, he is now Head of UCD's School of History. After studying history and political science in Berlin, he completed his DPhil and a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at Oxford University. Prof. Gerwarth has also held research fellowships or visiting professorships at Harvard University, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and Sciences Po Paris. In 2013-14 he was an Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Fellow at the Herder Institute in Marburg and a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

For his work on political violence in the twentieth century, he has received major research grants from the European Research Council (ERC), the Guggenheim Foundation, the Irish Research Council (IRC), and the Gerda-Henkel Foundation. He is an elected Member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Academia Europaea, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
