This book is an attempt to better understand our contemporary and immanently contradictory modes of freedom in which our “care of the self” is often entangled with different regimes of (self)government. This controversial situation, the ever-moving line between freedom and (self)government, are analyzed in the context of what Nikolas Rose calls “psy” disciplines - the ever-growing but disperse field of practices and techniques which aim to master and softly regulate the individual psyche.
