When I fall into the subject of this book, I - naturally - did not quite understand the path I was about to take. If I had done so, it is quite possible I would have refused the undertaking. And that would not be without reason. First of all, the genre uncertainty of such a study seems to be discouraging. Because the night, of course, is not just a natural phenomenon, a cut of natural time, but also a multifaceted symbol and component of the imaginary world of man. The Middle Ages, therefore, treats the night in many perfectly different ways - as one undoubtedly problematic and impeding the normal course of life astronomical phenomenon, but also as an ancient old source of irrepressible superstitions and fears of one great magical consciousness...
