The collective monograph presents the scientific results of the project The Quality of Democracy in Bulgaria: Democratic Consensus and Citizen Participation", funded by the Scientific Research Fund of the Ministry of Education and Science and implemented by a research team of the Department of Political Science in New Bulgarian University.

Bulgaria is facing serious democratic challenges in a turbulent political environment. Political instability has dominated the scene since mass protests in 2013 and has shaped the country’s democratic debate. Democratic backsliding undermines market values, reduces economic growth potential, and gives rise to nationalism and populism.
